Well kick-off for the opening match of the season was at 1pm on a sunny afternoon. It was a home match against Birtley FC.. The match kicked off on time on the Community Centre pitch with Lumley kicking away from the club house.
The pressure was put on Birtley from the start and in the third minute William C playing on the left, laid the ball square across to No 8- David T to open the scoring for Lumley’s season. Lumley kept up the pressure and were rewarded with a second on the seventh minute Michael R placed an inswinging corner which was cleared. However it came to Riley B who volleyed into the back of the net, 2- 0 to Lumley. Michael T got Lumley’s 3rd and forth thanks to some good work by Reece and a excellent turn by himself to create the space and shoot. Michael R was itching to be on the score sheet and didn’t have to wait long, a chip over the defence saw him run through to score his first of the season and Lumleys’ fifth. Birtleys heads dropped slightly but credit to the team, they picked themselves up and started to play putting together some good passing moves. With the first half drawing to a close the ball came to Reece about 20 yards out. He controlled it well and shot with pace, the keeper tried to stop it but the pace on the ball saw it fly into the goal, 6 - 0 to Lumley at half time.
The second half kicked off with the ball moving round in the midfield. Credit again to Birtley as they pressured Lumley, but some good defending saw the ball kept out of Lumley’s goal .10 minutes into the half and Lumley started to settle again. A good move by Michael T saw him using his pace down the wing, he cut into the box and scored Lumley’s seventh. A few minutes later Lumley were eight up with a great shot from Michael R. Good work on the right saw the ball crossed, however it was only part cleared. Dan Mu got his head to the ball to stop the clearance and it dropped to Nathan who with one touch teed the ball up and volleyed it off the underside of the bar. Birtley again came back at Lumley pressing for a consolation goal however the defence stood strong. Again Lumley pressured Birtley Michael T using his pace caught Birtley’s last man and pinched the ball to get Lumley’s 10th. Birtley never gave up and showed their skill with some good pacing moves. Lumley’s defence and midfield played well. Lewis Cable working from left midfield managed to get into a shooting position. Placing the ball wide of Birtley’s keeper the ball struck the right post rebounding back hitting the keeper and into the net. At 11-0 Lumley still pressured and with a few minutes left Michael T broke free to get his fifth and Lumley‘s twelfth. A good result. Jack C playing his first game for Lumley deserves a special mention for settling in so well. Well done Jack..
